Piano Tuning

Pianos do not remain in tune forever, even if they are not played regularly, and, if you own and play a piano then you will need to have it tuned regularly. Most people use the services of a professional piano tuner for this. It is generally recommended that a piano that is played at home should be tuned at least every six months depending on how often it is played. Pianos that are used for performance use may need to be tuned more often than this.

There are many reasons behind a piano falling out of tune. In some cases this is simply down to regular use (or even lack of use) but a lot of the time the changes that are experienced here are down to environmental issues such as humidity. The notes that are made on a piano are based on strings which are set at a certain tension. So, issues such as humidity can change the actual tension of a string and alter the note that it can make. A good piano tuner can give you advice on how and where to keep your piano to avoid these kinds of issues.

If your piano has not been played for a long time then your tuner may have to take on a rough tuning exercise to try and bring it back up to being in tune once again. They will then fine tune the piano to get the best tuning. Most pianos are tuned to what is known as concert pitch (or A440). This pitch is designed to make a piano play best in tandem with other orchestral instruments.
